Campus Updates & Reminders:
We are one week away from our annual Fred T. Korematsu Day celebration! We are excited to continue the tradition of celebrating our school’s namesake and honoring the “speak up” legacy. Families are welcome to join us for either of the assemblies (8:45 and 9:30) on Friday, January 30th. Please make sure to check in at the front office prior to making your way to the MPR.
Don’t forget to do your annual registration form. This needs to be completed for ALL students grades TK through 5th. Currently, about 34% of student forms have been completed. Log into your parent portal to complete it today.
PTO Message:
School Play Hercules! Next Week! Missoula Children’s Theater is stopping at Korematsu Elementary School next week to lead our students in a performance of Hercules! Students audition Monday, rehearse after school all week, and perform on Saturday to family and friends. There is no cost to participate or watch the performance. Open to 1st-6th grade Korematsu students.
- Auditions are Monday 1/26 after school at 3:15pm-5:15pm in the MPR.
- Students MUST have a Permission Slip to audition - check backpacks or print.
- Rehearsals are all week and may vary by role. See the rehearsal schedule here.
- Performance is Saturday at 11am in the MPR. Open to the public, no cost to attend!
Social Justice Corner:
Let’s learn about Mr. Korematsu’s later life and legacy:
- Filed a motion with the Supreme Court to have his case thrown out due to racism, but the court denied it
- 1983: Case was seen by the CA District Court who said that the case should be overturned and charges cleared; US Supreme Court has still not overturned the case
- 1988: Civil Liberties Act passed giving public apology and compensation to Japanese Americans who were incarcerated
- 1998: Fred was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom
- 2010: Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution declared to be celebrated on his birthday every year
