Dear Korematsu Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed your weekend. The cooler weather has been a nice change from the triple digit heat. Here are a few updates for this week:

School Site Council (SSC)

We need to fill three out of five parent spots this year for our School Site Council. Please let me know if you are interested by emailing me at dcurtaz@djusd.net. Once I have interested candidates, I will put out a ballot for voting (hopefully, by next week). Here is a brief explanation of what a School Site Council does:

  • There are 10 members: 5 parents, 3 teachers, 1 classified employee, and the principal
  • It is a 2 year commitment
  • We meet once a month (will start as zoom meetings until we are back on campus)
  • The SSC oversees the site budget and how the money allocated to Korematsu is spent in our School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA).
  • The SSC works with the principal to create and approve the following year’s SPSA (that will happen in May 2021)

Attendance/Reporting Absences

If your child is sick, has an appointment, or you are away from technology for any other reason, please make sure to contact the office to let them know of the absence. If you email the teacher to let them know about your child’s absence, please ‘cc Semra Fanucchi (sfanucchi@djusd.net). You can also call it in at 530.757.5358 ext. 101. We understand that we are all learning this new system together. Teachers try their best to remember to forward emails about absences to Semra, but it does not always happen with all that is going on for them. As always, our team is here to support in any way possible.

Message from our School Counselor, April Mears

You all may have noticed an invitation to join the "Korematsu School Counseling" course on Canvas. Please be sure to accept the invitation so you and your student can have access to counseling lessons, resources and important announcements.

Also, virtual social clubs will be starting in the next few weeks to offer an opportunity for students to socialize with their peers in a virtual setting. Clubs may include lunch bunch, pet club, lego club, and mindfulness, and will take place through Zoom. If you would like to opt your student out of being part of these clubs, please fill out the following form: Virtual Club Opt-Out If you have any clarifying questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to April at amears@djusd.net.

Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) Newsletter

If you want to sign up to receive the weekly PTO News Emails you can use this link to add your email address to the mailing list. It's quick and easy. I highly recommend it because it's a great way to stay connected and be "in the know" about the details of what's going on at Korematsu through the PTO and beyond my weekly message. Here is the link to opt in to PTO emails: https://mailchi.mp/9e236ceb70da/kpto

Student Council

Last Thursday, fourth through sixth graders received a screencast explaining student council officers and a link to an application from me through their teachers’ Canvas pages. Students have until this Wednesday to turn in applications if they are interested in an officer position. Once officers are picked, the student council will have some training from me (via zoom) and then we will be reaching out to classroom teachers in first through sixth grade for student council class representatives.

All the Best,

Principal Curtaz
