Welcome Back

Hello Korematsu Families,

Welcome to the 20-21 school year. I am honored to continue as the principal of Korematsu. I look forward to getting to all of our new families and students. It will be more difficult during distance learning, but I plan to make it happen! Below are some important updates:

Class Assignments

This year, we will not be having our usual paper parade. So on Wednesday, August 19th, you will receive an email by either your student’s teacher or me with their classroom assignment for the 20-21 school year.

Class Schedules

Teachers have been working diligently on creating their weekly schedule for synchronous learning (live learning with the teacher). By August 24th your child’s teacher will communicate information and details about the first day of school along with their classroom schedule. Attendance will be taken daily. Here is what to expect with schedules:
Most whole class synchronous learning will happen between the hours of 8:30-12:00 pm (this is a window, not the amount of time your child will be online with his/her teacher). Most special subjects' time will be in the afternoon, but not all. If your child has an IEP, is an English Language Learner, needs reading intervention support, will have an elective (band, etc.) etc., you will hear from the appropriate specialist/teacher on when this time will be scheduled for your child during the week. Asynchronous learning (independent assignments, physical education, pre-recorded lessons by the teacher, to name a few) will be assigned to your student on Canvas and can be done within the day (this gives flexibility for families who are juggling multiple schedules, jobs, etc.).
Please be aware that schedules may be tweaked after the start of the school year as teachers figure out what works/does not work for their class. We also want to be cognizant of screen time and finding what works best for each student and age group. For this reason, teachers will be over communicating with families in the first month of school until the “sweet spot” for screen time (live with teacher, pre-recorded lessons) is found. We know it’s important for students to be “live” with their classmates and teachers, but we also want to be aware of total minutes in front of a screen. This will take time- please be patient.

Textbook/Material Pick-Up TBD

The goal is to have textbook/material pick-up prior to the start of school on Wednesday, August 26th. However, we are currently waiting on more materials to arrive, so I will be sending out an email with pick-up times as soon as we have dates/times scheduled. For those of you with us last year, textbook/material pick-up will be similar to what we did at the end of the 19-20 school year. If your child/children are in need of a Chromebook, please go to the District Office 536 B St (Tech office is in the back on C St.) between 8:00-12:00 for pick up.

Parent Training/Canvas

Canvas is our new learning platform (this is in place of google classroom). The Canvas portal will open on Friday, August 21st. Please login prior to the first day of school. Each teacher will have a Canvas page, where students will get all assignments, daily schedules, zoom meeting times, etc. DJUSD will provide parent training on Canvas this coming week. The Canvas 101 PD course for students is now ready and you can access with this link: https://djusd.instructure.com/courses/1790

HOW TO LOG ON to Canvas: Visit https://djusd.instructure.com and select “DJUSD Log In” using their school Google account. Please note, they will not see their schedules or teachers IN CANVAS until August 21st. If you have trouble with your login, please email techsupport@djusd.net.

Korematsu Office Hours

The office will be open to the public on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:00-12:00 pm. Please follow all social distancing protocols (masks must be worn to enter the office, one family/person at a time, etc.). We have a table set up just as you enter to assist you with our new procedures. We will be answering phones while the office is open and will be checking voicemail multiple times a day. To leave a message for Laura Reaka (lreaka@djusd.net) press extension 102, and for Semra Fanucchi (sfanucchi@djusd.net) press extension 101.

Back to School Night

Our VIRTUAL Back to School is set for Wednesday, September 2nd:

  • Primary (TK-3rd)- 5:45 pm
  • Intermediate (4th-6th)- 6:45 pm

If you can, I recommend printing out this email. There is a lot of information to keep straight as we start the school year. Teachers, staff, and the district have been hard at work all summer to make distance learning the best it can be for each of our students. We will hit some bumps in the road along the way, but I know we will all work together to make this year a successful one for each of your students.

Thank you,

Principal Curtaz
