Air Quality:  Schools Open with limits on Outside Activity

11/12/2018

Dear DJUSD Families,

On this Veterans Day as we honor the many men and women who serve our country in the U.S. Military, we also recognize the heroic efforts of countless firefighters as well as the tireless efforts of many dedicated citizens in our community who are working to support the victims of the wildfires raging in our region as well as in the southern part of our state. Many in our school community have friends and loved ones who have been affected by the devastation.  DJUSD is partnering with the Davis Police Department to support relief efforts; the DJUSD District Office at 526 B Street will be a drop off point for supplies and donations for fire victims this week.

Air Quality in Davis

The fires also sending smoke and ash causing very poor air quality in and around our community.  While school will continue as scheduled, school administrators and staff will be monitoring the local Air Quality Index (AQI) regularly to determine safe levels of student activity each day.  In general, the next two days are predicted to be unhealthy for all groups, and so we anticipate the following protocols for schools:

  • All outside activity will be cancelled or moved indoors until air quality improves

  • After school athletic practices and games at our junior high schools and Davis Senior High will be rescheduled or moved inside

  • During the school day, classroom doors will remain closed to ensure safe air quality

Reminders for Parents

Thank you for your patience as we navigate the air quality and make decisions to keep student health our priority.  We also recognize that many students may choose not to commute to school by bike or on foot, so there may be more vehicle traffic at drop off or pick up.  Please plan your schedule accordingly.

Finally, if your student has allergies, asthma, or other medical conditions that are aggravated by the poor air quality, please be sure to contact your school office so our staff can help to monitor student health and well-being.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your school office.
